Boat Winterization in Las Vegas

Desert days are warm, but winter nights in the valley and at the lakes can freeze. Water trapped in an engine, ballast system or plumbing expands when it freezes and can crack components. Winterization protects a boat that will sit through the cold months, and commissioning gets it ready again in spring.

Questions and answers

Does a boat in Las Vegas really need winterizing?

Overnight temperatures in the Las Vegas valley and at the lakes can drop below freezing in winter. Water left in an engine block, manifolds, ballast tanks or plumbing can freeze and crack them, so a boat that will sit through the cold months should be winterized.

What does winterization usually involve?

Steps follow the engine and boat manufacturers’ procedures and typically include draining or protecting the raw-water cooling system and manifolds, checking closed-cooling coolant, stabilizing fuel, changing engine and drive or V-drive oil as specified, draining or protecting ballast tanks, pumps and lines, and protecting freshwater, shower, heater and head plumbing with non-toxic, potable-water antifreeze where required. We confirm the checklist for your boat when you book.

I use my boat through the winter. Do I still need it?

Regular use does not prevent freeze damage between outings. Ask an appropriate marine technician about protection for your engine, ballast and plumbing based on the manufacturer instructions, storage conditions and forecast.

How much does winterization cost?

It depends on the engine, the ballast and plumbing systems and the size of the boat. Send the year, make and model and we quote it before any work starts.

Do you recommission the boat in spring?

Commissioning requests are accepted. Choose it on the form, and we confirm the scope, provider and quote before work starts.
