Before taking delivery

Confirm the exact boat identity, agreed equipment, written condition information, ownership paperwork and insurance arrangements. Review the appropriate NDOW transaction instructions. Keep identification and sensitive financial documents out of general website inquiry forms.

Before operating

Check the education requirement and complete an approved course where needed. Read your boat and engine manuals. Locate safety gear and agree on a passenger briefing, loading plan and emergency communications. Use the official equipment requirements for your boat and route; this short checklist is not an exhaustive legal equipment list.

Before leaving home

Review park access and the weather forecast. Confirm your tow combination and storage clearances, or the agreed delivery arrangement. Share your intended route and return time with someone ashore. Pack drinking water and sun protection, and plan the day around your crew’s needs.

Before leaving the boat

Follow the boat’s shutdown procedure. Clean, drain and dry the boat and equipment, and check destination-specific inspection requirements before moving to another waterbody. Record faults or maintenance needs while they are fresh. Agree on who handles return-to-storage tasks.
